Principal's Welcome Message

It is with great excitement that I welcome you to Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School for the 2017-18 school year.  This is my 18th year at Pau-Wa-Lu. The first 15 years I served as the Assistant Principal, and this is my 3rd year as Principal.  This is a wonderful school and you will find that the staff is dedicated to ensuring you get the best education possible in a safe and caring environment while having some fun along the way.

This year we are continuing our "Teaming" concept.  What is Teaming?  6th and 7th grade students will have from 2-4 teachers for their academic classes.  That means a student might only have two or three teachers for all of their academic subjects, more like what you experienced at the elementary school.  As students get to 8th grade they will have a different teacher for almost every class, more like what they will see at the high school.  We also have an Academic Success class for all students which will help you learn the skills it takes to be a more successful student.  Probably the most exciting additions are the electives you will be able to take: Computer Programming, Gateway to Technology, Band, Choir, Art, and Photography,  just to name a few.

Here at the middle school we set high expectations for both academics and behavior.  We feel a structured yet supportive environment is what is needed to maximize learning.  This handbook should be a valuable tool for you to use as a reference about the policies and expectations at this school.  We ask that you and your parents read through this handbook to familiarize yourselves with its contents.  As you go through middle school and even through high school, your parents are one of your true assets for support and direction, use them!

Pau-Wa-Lu offers many opportunities and I encourage you to explore as many as you possibly can.  Take a chance and get involved with a club: Band, Choir, NJHS, SSA, Actions.  Go out for a sport: Cross Country, Basketball, Volleyball, Track or Wrestling.  Take an elective that is something new: Choir, Band, Coding, Video Productions, or Gateway to Technology.  The more involved in activities at your school, the more connected you feel, and it makes the experience much more fun.

I am very proud of this school and honored to be your Principal.  I believe middle school is the place that can set the stage for a successful future.  I am always here to help and my door is always open.  Please do not hesitate to stop by my office if you have questions or need help with something.

Sincerely,

David Whittemore
Principal
